Course objectives

The main objective is to provide all engineers who are not feeling competent in Functional Safety with the basic understanding principles in the so often made complex topics and jargon of Functional Safety used in the Process Industry

The participant should have after this training the necessary information to evaluate Functional Safety certificate-flyers and documents.

  • Course material: 1 paper syllabuses: handouts with all slides and GMI SIL manual – 4th edition paper or eBook (depending on availability)
  • Certificate: Course attendance certificate on personal name
  • Language used: English material and depends on location English or Dutch spoken

  • Avoiding human failures, how can we achieve that?
  • Overview of a Functional Safety life cycle using a practical example
  • The most common mistakes and wrong understanding , summarised but not limited to:
    • HAZOP and other techniques
    • Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS)
    • Safety Integrity Levels (SIL)
    • Safety Instrumented Function (SIF)
    • Safety Availability and/or Process Availability, simply explained
    • Probability of Dangerous Failure on Demand (PFD), a number game?
    • Beware of the jungle of Certificates on instrumentation and system, engineering paper is not the solution!
    • Generic failure data versus the plant/process specific data, illustrated with some simple example
    • Proof test interval and coverage importance
    • How to keep your safety loop performance in the tolerable zone?
    • Functional Safety Assessment and independencies, when-who and how to perform them
  • Brief introduction to the IEC61511:2016 part 1 corrigendum (Sep 2016) and amendment 1.0 (Aug 2017)
  • Conformance requirements to the IEC61511-1:2016
